A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to take a 2012 Ford Explorer for a brief spin through the Gaslamp District in downtown San Diego.
Being that it was a short drive, maybe 15 minutes long, I'm in no position to give any kind of thorough review but the slimmed-down 2012 Ford Explorer made a very favorable instant impression on me. Usually I'm a bit annoyed and bewildered by the arrangement of controls when I enter the driver's seat of a new car. For some reason the 2012 Ford Explorer felt just right.
Driving the Explorer was a breeze. It handles well without in any way coming across as exceptional, but exceptional handling is not something I'd expect from an SUV, not even one that's moving towards cross-over status. On the other hand, if you imagine driving an Explorer is somewhat like driving a tank you'll be delightfully surprised.
I've never owned anything other than a car so I'm not used to the modular design of SUVs and minivans. For those who are, the seating in the 2012 Ford Explorer can be arranged in a great many ways to suit different passenger and cargo needs.
Below are a few pictures of the 2012 Ford Explorer.
